Uniting Communities is a leading not-for-profit organisation, working across South Australia through more than 90 community service programs. Our team of over 1500 staff and volunteers support and engage with more than 30,000 South Australians each year. We strive to build compassionate communities and great lives through community strengthening, quality service delivery and advocacy.

About the Role

Therapeutic Youth Residential Care, also known as Jo’s, is highly regarded in South Australia as a unique residential care service for young people. The service commenced operations in 2017, with the Service Model being developed through a process of conducting research into national and international frameworks for residential care and complex trauma, as well research into the previously released Nyland Report. The service was designed to support our aim of creating something extraordinary in South Australia - more than just a house, but rather a loving home environment for young people where they are supported to move away from their past trauma to a place of transformation.

Jo’s focuses on having a down-to-earth, fun and relaxed culture – in which both staff and young people are supported to flourish. Some of the key aspects that makes Jo’s unique include:

  • One full time Senior Therapeutic Coordinator based in each of the Jo’s houses to ensure consistency for young people and above average support to youth workers.
  • One full time Therapeutic Specialist/Senior Practitioner based across the houses to oversee all clinical therapeutic practices, providing coaching, role modelling and professional development.
  • Therapeutic Youth Workers are assigned to one house, on a two week rotating roster, allowing meaningful and authentic relationships to be formed amongst young people and staff.
  • Jo’s houses are sourced through private investors, thus creating high quality home-like environments to ensure the young people and staff feel comfortable in the Jo’s environment.
  • Daily support from the Senior Therapeutic Coordinators and Therapeutic Specialist/Senior Practitioner, both of whom are based at the Jo’s houses and as such have a relevant and current understanding to the needs of the young people.
  • Fortnightly Team Meetings, in which we have a fun shared lunch and award fun team awards, as well as holding a group clinical supervision session to ensure all staff feel comfortable with the support of young people.
  • Monthly formal Operational and Clinical Supervision, along with 24/7 on call support, for which you are encourages to call whenever you need – even if just to debrief.
  • Jo’s work with families following a young person commencing, thus enabling a systemic intervention to break the cycle of intergenerational abuse, child protection intervention and welfare dependency.
